Dream in Heart
On the first day of school our professor introduced a new classmate—a wrinkled little old lady—to us Her name was Rose and she was eightyseven years old
After class Rose and I walked to the Student Union Building and shared a chocolate milkshake She told me she always dreamed of having a college education and now she was getting one We became instant friends Every day for the following months we would leave class together and talk nonstop I was always attracted listening to this time machine as she shared her wisdom and experience with me
Rose became famous and easily made friends wherever she went She tended to be highly motivatedresponsible and deeply involved in class participation In spare time she had someone hang out or go to bars with She even participated in some form of athletic activity She said that extracurricular activities can form a vital part of her experience creating unique chances for friendship and learning
At the end of the term we invited Rose to speak at our football meal A little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said I’ m sorry I’ m so nervous As we laughed she cleared her throat and began We do not stop playing because we are old we grow old because we stop playing There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up If you’ re nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year you will turn twenty If I’ m eightyseven years old and stay in bed for a year I will turn eightyeight Anybody can grow older It’ s nonoptional but that doesn’ t take any talent or ability The idea is to grow up by always finding the chance in change In this way the elderly don’ t have regrets for what they did but rather for things they did not do Rose concluded her speech by courageously singing The Rose She challenged us to study the words of the song and lived them out in daily lives
At the year’ s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in honor of the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’ s never too late to be all you can possibly be
24 Why does the author compare Rose to time machine in Paragraph 2
A To stress her old age and knowledge of life
B To describe the close friendship between them
C To show that she always enjoyed her active life
D To explain why she took on a challenge in college
25 Rose was invited to speak at the football meal most probably because ______
A she was a great football fan
B she was the smartest student
C she tried hard to achieve her dream
D she became more educated than the others
26 We can learn that Rose agreed with the idea that ______
A growing older means growing up
B it takes talent and ability to grow up
C receiving high education helps to be courageous
D one grows older at the same time when he grows up
27 The passage is intended to ______
A provide an example for the elderly B discuss how to grow up quickly
C tell the importance of attending college D inspire the readers to live up to lives

Whenever Jane Lockshin went out to lunch with her elderly aunt Sylvia she would offer to pay the bill After all Sylvia Bloom was a modest secretary who lost her beloved husband more than a decade ago She lived alone in a onebedroom Brooklyn apartment and took the subway everywhere including to her job at a Manhattan law firm She worked there—fulltime—until she was 96 Simply put Lockshin didn’t want Aunt Sylvia to blow her budget on lunch
So when Bloom died in 2016 at 97 it was something of a shock to discover that she’d left behind a multimilliondollar estate Almost as shocking She had chosen to give 82 million to charity Six million dollars went to educational programs at the Henry Street Settlement a social services organization in
New York City An additional 2 million went to scholarship funds including at Bloom’s alma mater Hunter College She had millions says Lockshin and no one suspected it
Bloom’s bequest to the Settlement the largest in its 126year history will help fund a program for disadvantaged students The gift has been transformative not just because of the good we’ll be able to do with it says David Garza the agency’s executive director but because of the selflessness and the humility behind it
Sylvia Bloom’s story is indeed extraordinary but it’s not as uncommon as you might think Workingclass benefactors—secretaries teachers janitors and more—make headlines with aweinspiring regularity
21Why did Jane offer to pay the bill according to paragraph 1
ABecause her aunt lost her husband
BBecause her aunt refused to pay it herself
CBecause her aunt lived alone and was a secretary
DBecause she thought her aunt didn’t have much money
22What does David Garza’s words mean
APoor students will be funded by the money
BThe gift is important because of nothing but the good can be done with it
CIt is the devotion and modesty behind it that makes the gift extraordinary
DJane Lockshin’s donation is thought highly of
23What might the following paragraph talk about
AThe way the money was spent
BThe way Sylvia saved so much money
CThe inspiration Jane got from the story
DThe story of other donors like Sylvia

There are plenty of common fears that even if we don’t have them ourselves we totally understand spiders heights creepy clowns And then there’s fear of the number 13 It’s a number just like any other and yet there are horror movies about it some buildings intentionally have no 13th floor and plenty of couples avoid getting married on the 13th of the month
What makes this number so scary Well there’s no single reason behind the widespread fear Historians have pinpointed a few potential reasons for 13’s prevalence as an unlucky number
The most popular theory about the origin of fear of the number 13 is connected with the Bible there were 13 diners at the Last Supper The 13th to arrive was Judas who betrayed Jesus In Norse mythology(神话) too a table of 13 proved unlucky According to one of the myths the primary 12 gods were dining together peacefully until the god of evil Loki showed up As soon as this 13th guest arrived chaos and carnage followed The superstition(迷信) that a table of 13 diners spells bad news even made its way into Harry Potter
On its own there are no problems with the number itself It’s 13’s proximity to the number 12 that makes it look bad according to scientists and mathematicians In many ancient cultures 12 was considered to be a perfect number Civilizations as far back as ancient Sumer based their systems of telling time around the number 12 There are 12 hours on a clock and 12 months in a year As the number immediately following this perfect one 13 seemed flawed inspiring unease throughout the ancient world
24The first paragraph is intended to _______
Aattract readers’ attention on fear
Boffer background information
Cintroduce the topic of the passage
Dput forward an opinion
25The underlined word carnage in paragraph 3 can be replaced by ______
Achallenge
Bconfusion
Camazement
Dviolence
26According to the passage which of the following is true
AJudas betrayed Juses at the Last Supper
BLoki’s arrival brought about chaos during the meal
CIn many modern cultures 12 was regarded as a perfect number
DScientists proved that the number 13 was flawed

Earlier this year six Amazon delivery robots were introduced in a trial program in Snohomish County Washington The boxy machines which resemble sixwheeled coolers carry meals groceries and packages to homes and offices
As a growing number of citizens expect immediate or scheduled delivery for just about everything such services are fast developing which is regarded as an effective approach to solve the last mile delivery problem By shifting the delivery vehicles from roads to the sidewalk cities could greatly reduce traffic jams But companies like Amazon are not developing this delivery technology simply to clear up urban traffic Selfdriving vehicles and sidewalk robots could reduce lastmile delivery costs in cities by as much as 40 percent according to a 2018 report
To gain public trust these machines must demonstrate they can safely and quietly share pedestrian spaces It’s actually really hard to move on crowded sidewalks and not bump into people says Renia Ehrenfeucht chair of the Community and Regional Planning Department at The University of New Mexico
Sidewalk robots may also face disruptions to their own routines including curious bystanders blocking their paths and thieves looking to grab a package on route I do think
the largest problem is going to be malevolent(恶意) behavior toward these things says Mary Cummings director of the Humans and Autonomy Lab at Duke University Additional challenges include perfecting the software that helps delivery robots avoid both still and moving objects as well as dealing with city officials who want to protect public spaces For example San Francisco home to delivery startups such as DoorDash and Postmates put a ban in 2017 on autonomous deliveries by sidewalk robots and has only slowly opened the door for companies seeking permits Other US communities have regulated where such robots can go and how they must behave
Given these obstacles sidewalk delivery robots are not necessarily destined to win the future A 2016 McKinsey report pointed out oldfashioned bicycles remain the most costcompetitive choice for many lastmile deliveries (342 words)
27 Which of the following is not a reason for companies to invest in delivery robots
ATo ease the traffic pressure
BTo reduce the lastmile delivery costs
CTo gain public trust
DTo offer citizens immediate delivery
28 Why do city officials oppose the use of delivery robots
AThey worry that goods on delivery robots will be grabbed
BThey worry that the rights of pedestrians will be violated
CThey worry that curious onlookers will block the way
DThey think the software for delivery robots is inadequate
29 What is the author’s attitude towards the future of delivery robots
Ahopeful
Bpessimistic
Cdoubtful
Dindifferent
30 What is the best title for the text
ADelivery robots—A revolutionary step
BDelivery robots—An effective approach to traffic jams
CDelivery robots—A sidewalkblocking nightmare
DDelivery robots—Rise of new technology and the challenges

Sleep is vital to your physical and mental health On average adults should optimally receive between seven and nine hours of sleep each night 31 For example some people feel best with eight continuous hours of sleep while others do well with six to seven hours at night and daytime napping
While you might not be able to control some factors that interfere with your sleepyou can adopt habits that encourage better sleep Start with these simple tips
32
Set aside no more than eight hours for sleep The recommended amount of sleep for a healthy adult is at least seven hours Most people don't need more than eight hours in bed to achieve this goal Go to bed and get up at the same time every day Try to limit the difference in your sleep schedule on weeknights and weekends to no more than one hour 33
Pay attention to what you eat and drink
Don't go to bed hungry or stuffed 34 Your discomfort might keep you up Nicotine caffeine and alcohol deserve caution too The stimulating effects of nicotine and caffeine take hours to wear off and can wreak havoc on quality sleep And even though alcohol might make you feel sleepy it can disrupt sleep later in the night
Manage worries
Try to resolve your worries or concerns before bedtime Note down what's on your mind and then set it aside for tomorrow Stress management might help 35 Meditation can also ease anxiety In fact nearly everyone has an occasional sleepless night—but if you often have trouble sleeping contact your doctor Identifying and treating any underlying causes can help you get the better sleep you deserve
AStick to a sleep schedule
BBut those needs vary individually
CInclude physical activity in your daily routine
DBeing consistent reinforces your body's sleepwake cycle
EStart with the basics such as getting organized setting priorities and delegating asks
FIt can be hard to measure your sleep patterns against those of the people around you
GIn particular avoid heavy or large meals within a couple of hours of bedtime

Students who have used electronic cigarettes by the time they start ninth grade are more likely than others to start smoking traditional cigarettes and other tobacco products within the next year according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health Electronic cigarettes or ecigarettes deliver nicotine to the lungs by heating a liquid solution that contains nicotine and other chemicals to produce a spray that the user takes in
As part of a survey of substance use and mental health among high school students in Los Angeles the study compared the start of tobacco use among 222 students who had used ecigarettes but not any other tobacco products and 2308 who had neither used ecigarettes or any other tobacco products when initially surveyed at the start of ninth grade The 2530 students who initially reported never using tobacco underwent followup assessments after six and 12 months Students were asked about lifetime and past sixmonth use of ecigarettes or any other forms of tobacco products
During the first six months after being surveyed 307 percent of those who had used ecigarettes started using tobacco products such as cigarettes and cigars compared to only 81 percent of those who had never used ecigarettes Over the following six months leading into the start of 10th grade 252 percent of ecigarette users had used tobacco products compared to just 93 percent of nonusers
While teen tobacco use has fallen in recent years this study confirms that we should continue to closely watch teen smoking patterns said NIDA Director Nora D Volkow MD Parents and teens should recognize that although ecigarettes might not have the same harmful effects of regular cigarettes they do carry a risk of addiction
Recreational ecigarette use is becoming increasingly popular among teens who have never smoked tobacco said Adam M Leventhal PhD the first author on the study While we cannot conclude that ecigarette use directly leads to smoking this research raises concerns that recent increases in youth ecigarette use could ultimately lead to the spread of smokingrelated illness

2For a single womanyards are a strange thing You don’t know whether to buy a lawn mower(割草机)or hire someone to mow it I did the latterover many years
There was one exception In my early 30sI lived in a cottage near my fatherwho had a tractor He lived around the corner on an old country lane now fully developed But at the timeit was with sweet relief having just returned from city lifethat I drove his borrowed tractor down the lane in the late afternoonmowed my landand then drove it back in the evening lightgazing(注视)up at the stars as they came out
Soon the routine became impossible with traffic in the developing area I needed someone to do my yard work
Vardman was a devoted young boy He sang at the top of his lungs as he mowed His work was a joy But Vardman grew up After his graduation from high schoolwhich I attendedand his leaving for collegeI was without
So here I was with two African men who brought not only knowledge but a deep love of working the land There was a peace about the work they did The perfection was noticeable everywhere with every border in place the unnecessary brush cleared out The rhythm in their work the rhythm of their work—it was poetry to watch
Later I moved to North Carolina I found myself in another small house with a beautiful but wasted yard A strange mountain man gave me a wonderful price and began what has become an exercise in gracegratitude^ and being simple
Over the few years I have lived herehe has slowly patiently lovingly turned a longneglected place into a quiet beauty Quietmodestsincere he uses only natural products on the lawn and flower beds After the growing season ends he collects his final paycheck and disappears into the mountains A quiet man is teaching me patience and how it brings beauty back

3 It’s a small piece—merely a square brick drawing a curlyhaired Archangel Gabriel—but it may be the oldest surviving artwork by the Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci If confirmed this painting may show historians what da Vinci looked like as a teenager That’s because the 1471 creation mayin fact be a selfportrait da Vinci made when he was just 18 years old
However many doubt the artwork’s authenticity Martin Kemp an retired professor of art history at Oxford University who is a Leonardo expert dismissed the claim absolutely The chance of its being by Leonardo is less than zero Kemp told The Guardian The silly season for Leonardo never closes
The nearly 8inchby8inch square brick may contain clues linking it to da Vinci according to Ernesto Solaris an art historian and da Vinci expert and Ivana Rosa BonJfantino a handwriting expert Both say that a signature and date written on the angels jawline —which reads Da Vinci Lionardo with the date 1471 closely match da Vinci's handwriting
Next to the 1471 date are the numbers 52 and 72 It’s possible the 52 is a reference to 1452 Leonardo’s birth year Meanwhilethe 7 and 2 may refer to the letters G and B (G is the seventh letter of the alphabet and B is the second) which could stand for Gabriel These numbers arc more than a signature It is typical of the famous puzzles that he loved all his life Solari said
When analyzing the handwriting Bonfantino reviewed documents known to belong to da Vinci Bonfantino noticed that the 1 in the 1471 date was shorter than the other numbers which matched the previous examples of da Vinci's writing
1What do we know about the painting
AIt is higher than 8inches
BIt is a selfportrait drawn by historians
CIt may be the oldest artwork drawn by Leonardo da Vinci
DIt is only a square piece with a curlyhaired character
2What does the underlined word dismissed in Paragraph 2 probably mean
ADisagreed
BFined
CRemoved
DDisliked
3Why do Solari and Bonfantino think the painting contain clues about da Vinci
AIt is typical of him to express love
BIt has an important influence on him
CThe numbers next to the 1471 are his birthday
DThe signature and date is the same as his handwriting
4What is the main idea of the text
AA doubtful painting from da Vinci
BA discussion about the artwork
CAn introduction about da Vinci's painting
DA description about da Vinci's handwriting
4 NANJING—Why do some brains discover the laws of universe while others create soulstirring music or paintings How is memory and consciousness generated
We can observe billions of stars and detect ripples in space but we still barely understand our brains which can see through the universe Their complex structure and the number of neurons(神元) are only estimates
Now Chinese scientists are planning to draw the clearest yet 3D map of the complex neurons and blood vessels(血) 封 in the human brain This ambitious project is like taking 3D photos of a huge forest of nearly 100 billion trees seeing not only the whole forest hut also every twig and leaf on each tree Our current methods cannot see both the trees and theforest We aim to develop new methods to obtain a highresolution map to see clearly how the neural network is connected said Luo Qingming leader of the research
Luo president of Hainan University and chief scientist of the Suzhou Institute for Brainsmatics of the HuazhongUniversity of Science and Technology ( HUST) in East China’s Jiangsu Province said the research will help in analyzing the mechanisms of brain diseases and promote the development of artificial intelligence
The continuous changes of neural networks and brain activities pose great challenges to the analysis of brain functions But we believe that brain functions and activities depend on the basic cells just as a circuit network depends on its basic unit—the electronic components said Luo Different types of neurons are the basis for the analysis of brain functions and for the diagnosis and treatment of brain diseaseshe said
1What can we learn according to the second paragraph
AWe don't know our brains well
BOur brains aren't too complex at all
COur brains can understand the space
DWe estimate our complex structure and neurons
2Why does Luo do the research
ABecause it will be a profitable research
BBecause it will promote the development of 3D movies
CBecause it will be beneficial to research human brain diseases
DBecause it will help more humans who have serious brain diseases
3What’s the main idea of the text
AThe scientists analyze the human brain recently
BThe function of human brain is important for humans
CThe complex structure and neurons are only estimates
DThe scientists are researching a 3D map of the human brain
4From which is the text probably taken
