I had insisted on dropping out of college after my first semester (学期) in order to try and join the Merchant Marine Using an article from Life as my guide I decided to hitchhike down to New Orleans and see the world
My family was relatively poor and my youth had been in the workers' section of a large New England mill town My father and I had spent a difficult time ever since my mother passed away It often seemed as if we were more like roommates rather than father and son He thought I was foolish to drop out of school I didn't inform him of my plans
One day in February I left a note on the kitchen table telling him I was going to New York for a few days and would be back soon I walked to a highway near where I lived stuck out my thumb and was on the road
My trip to New Orleans was a mistake The Merchant Marine wasn't taking on any people for a while I decided to wait in New Orleans until it did I lasted over a week living in a dirty hotel until my money started to run out I had to sleep in the park for a few days Life seemed to become a continuous adventure I wrote embarrassingly terrible poetry to express my bitterness
From New Orleans I went to New York and stayed with a friend for a few weeks then Martha's Vineyard living on the beach in April After that Nantucket and a deserted house and finally an extended stop in Boston There was no word from the Merchant Marine I felt so desperate My close friend Jimmy called me one day and asked me how everything was going I had to tell him the truth and he soon persuaded me to go back

The Lunar New Year for 2019 fell on February 5th Public Schools in New York gave the kids the day off to celebrate It was sunny How should I spend such a nice day I decided to take my daughter to an ice rink (溜冰场) I used to iceskate in my childhood and I assumed iceskating was a skill like riding a bike My 6yearold was desperate to learn I couldn't think of a better day to take her for her first spin around the pond
We arrived at the Wollman Rink near the south end of Central Park and I got us both laced up We awkwardly worked our way to the entrance of the rink and stepped onto ice that was more slippery than I remembered No sooner had our blades (冰刀) touched the frozen ice than both my daughter and I felt ourselves rushing toward the ground I managed to keep my balance by clinging to (紧贴着) the wall surrounding the rink and my daughter stayed upright by clinging to me I caught my breath and made a game plan Don't fall down In my mind as a middleaged woman falling was to be avoided at all costs
Falling hurts It's hard to get back up The ice is cold I decided if we could just stay upright I could count our day as a success So around the rink we went me holding tightly to my daughter's hand Any time our balance changed I would push our hands skyward leaving her swinging above the ice like a fish on a line We repeated this move for two rotations (圈) around the rink and then I gave up The stress of keeping us both standing was too much Maybe we can come back another time I told her

O'Connor and Reynolds set off into Kahurangi National Park intending to follow the river and camp for a few days then come out sometime before May 15 They initially followed their planned route but soon ran into trouble At their first campsite they tried to dry their clothes after walking with an effort through the river They ended up burning three out of the four socks that they had
What unfolded next was a series of critical mistakes The pair misjudged their distance — they walked further than they had expected Fog set in and made it difficult for them to know where to go They eventually realized that they were completely lost After a heated discussion they made the decision to stay put They had some food enough to last several days and they planned to ration (限定……量) it so it would last for as long as possible
New Zealand is a country known for adventure tourism Kahurangi is New Zealand's newest national park It's situated across both the Tasman and West Coast regions and covers an enormous 452 002 hectares It is a complex place — the area was heavily forested and rugged (岩石) the search was a difficult one to say the least Some areas in the park don't even have trails New Zealand's diverse climate means conditions can change rapidly making weather an additional danger to the challenging geography In these conditions three main things put life at risk freezing temperatures injury and starvation

When I came back to my father's I had been gone for over two months I had expected he would explode with violent anger because I hadn't called or even sent a postcard since I left I walked into the living room and sat down waiting for a volcano to erupt My father was reading a newspaper glanced up nodded at me and then went back to his paper He kept on reading for what seemed an hour but in fact it was probably only 510 minutes
Finally he put his paper down and looked at me He sighed and shook his head I made my mistakes in my youth it looks as if you have to make yours Just please be careful and don't get hurt he said He then went back to reading I felt so shocked and bowed my head in shame I had prided myself on my talent and turned a deaf ear to my father's advice I felt deep regret at the missed opportunity I decided to go back to college and finish my degree

At that moment one of her friends from school appeared I want to skate with her My daughter looked at me with anxious eyes Desperate to take my own skates off I agreed Her friend took her hand and I headed back to the benches Seconds later my daughter fell I was just about to jump over the wall to help her when I realized she was struggling only because she was laughing so hard I watched her reach for her friend's hand get back on her feet and skate off only to fall three paces later They finally came back to the benches because the friend had to head home
My daughter wanted to keep skating but I explained that I had already taken my skates off and wasn't going back to the ice I can skate on my own she insisted I had to agree I spent the next hour watching my daughter circle the rink stepping at first falling hanging on to the wall stepping falling and getting up falling then stepping and moving along smoothly until she could make it all the way around without a single fall

Luckily O'Connor and Reynolds had highquality tents and sleeping bags They could preserve them indefinitely from the cold However they carried only five or six days of food They also desperately needed to be nearer water Heavy rain paused rescue attempts for a number of days Temperatures dropped to 8˚C on some nights Yet the pair stayed calm and maintained their spirit Instead of wandering off and tiring themselves they saved their energy
A large search party including 50 people five tracking experts three dog teams and two helicopter crews were sent to find O'Connor and Reynolds What saved them was the decision to stay put They found water lit a fire and stayed in a small clearing in the woods The smoke from the fire saved their life as it helped the search team to spot their location The pair had some injuries and had been without food for some time However they were in good spirits O'Connor was very emotional when seeing her mother — she was in tears and couldn't talk much Both of them expressed their great thanks to the rescuers

When I was in high school in the late 1990s class schedules were handed out on the first day of class in the new school year and students had approximately one week to make changes to their course load and class selection This system generally worked out well for all involved
On the first day of my senior year however I looked over my schedule and realized a problem with my courses When I'd selected my senior classes at the end of junior year I'd chosen Creative Writing and Mythology as two English electives because I enjoyed both and had heard great things about the Mythology class which was taught by one of my favorite teachers Instead my schedule showed Creative Writing during the second semester but Public Speaking in the first semester in place of Mythology I was disappointed Public Speaking was something I did not like in the slightest
I went to the guidance office and spoke with my guidance counselor about my problem The counselor looked through my paperwork about the classes and explained Well Mythology just didn't work with your schedule so we had to put you into another elective to make sure you got your full English credit for graduation and Public Speaking worked with your class schedule
I just gave her a confused look This time the counselor spoke more slowly You need one full credit of English to graduate and Creative Writing is only half a credit so we had to choose another elective for you
I pointed to the top line of my schedule first period I'm in AP English AP English not only had a fullhour class period it also had a fullhour everyotherday lab period immediately after It was worth one and a half credits of English and took up the top line and a half of my schedule

Last weekend my 8yearold son Nicholas' baseball team was playing in a tournament in Rockwall Texas After having a win in our first game on Sunday morning we had a short break before our next game Since it was lunchtime and I hadn't packed much that was healthy we decided to go grab a quick bite
I didn't know the layout of the town we were in so it took me a few minutes to find a decent place to eat With the clock ticking we ate our burgers quickly We didn't get far when out of the corner of my eye I spotted a 7Eleven — suddenly I realized that I desperately needed a large cup of coffee The wind had made the morning a little chilly (寒冷) so I figured that adding some coffee to the cheeseburger would help me make it through the next game
When we got there I saw about eight coffee pots each of which contained about one cup of coffee The store clerk was only about five feet away doing some cleaning Since there were no other customers I got his attention and asked if he knew which pot had the freshest remains He said he didn't know but that he would make a fresh pot for me
I quickly responded that we were short on time because Nicholas had to go back to the field The clerk assured me that it wouldn't take long and as anxious as I was to get going I really didn't want to walk out of the store emptyhanded
As promised the coffee was ready in a flash The extraordinarily helpful clerk called me over once the pot was about half full He served me right away so I wouldn't have to wait any longer

The counselor gave me a surprised look and asked Then … why did you sign up for two electives Because I wanted to take them I said simply The counselor said We'll take Public Speaking off of your schedule for you which means you'll have another free period You'll have your new schedule by Monday I breathed a sigh of relief and expressed my thanks to her
On Monday morning I had a new schedule in hand This change would give me two free periods in a row A few weeks later a friend of mine mentioned that there was a second Mythology class during my original free period — the one right after Public Speaking on my original schedule — and it wasn't even full I could have had Mythology after all if someone had been willing to replace my free period which I didn't really need At least the extra free periods during senior year let me get homework done at school rather than having to spend time at home doing it A silver lining I guess
B
A few customers walked in and built a short line at the checkout counter Right as I got behind the last customer the clerk raised his hand and signaled to us to go around to him At first I thought he wanted me to cut in front of someone Then he made it very clear that the coffee was free I was really caught offguard as I stood there in disbelief I reached into my pocket to pull out some money but the clerk said No you don't need to pay Good luck today
I thanked him several times as we walked to the door As I pulled out of the parking lot I looked through the glass window of the convenience store and saw the clerk happily serving the customers who had been ahead of me in line I felt my eyes water as I considered the kindness of this clerk Nicholas and I made it to the field just in time Nicholas' team won that game and the two games that followed
