I live in the keepers’ lodge (屋舍) in London Zoo It’s a big shared house on site where eight zookeepers can care for the animals overnight It’s an experience like no other and one every zookeeper wants
Every morning I wake up at 7 when our gibbon (长臂猿) Jimmy starts singing loudly I take a coffee into the garden and chat to the hawks (老鹰) and the ibis (鹮) in the aviary (鸟舍) behind the house We fed our sloth (树懒) Edward when his mother couldn’t and built him a jungle gym (攀爬架) from broom handles Beanie a newborn giant anteater (食蚁兽) lived with us too
The best time is sunset when the gates have closed I’ll take a walk around and hear Bhanu our male lion roar and watch the ringtail lemurs (环尾狐猴) play with each other it seems they’re enjoying themselves
A keeper will say they don’t have favorite animals but it’s a lie Mine are small monkeys called emperor tamarins (皇绒猴) I helped a pair breed (孕育) a family of 10 when I worked in the rainforest house
Coronavirus has changed everything On March 21 the zoo closed to the public for the first time since World War II so it’s always quiet now I miss answering visitors’ questions and showing off our animals We’ve hidden food for the meerkats (狐蒙) to find and puzzles for the squirrel monkeys (松鼠猴)
We wear personal protective equipment to prepare food and activities Colds have passed between humans and primates (灵长类) we’re unsure if coronavirus can but it’s important to be safe
Living and working here is an unusual existence but at 42 it can’t get any better I have animals in my back garden that are threatened or extinct in the wild Even though we’re in lockdown I can stretch my legs and have a chat with a lion or an okapi (狓种非洲鹿) It’s a dream job I couldn’t imagine doing anything else

I am retiring from teaching This is my exit card
Teachers learn just as much from students as students learn from us These are a few of the things that I learned in my career
Roger was physically and mentally delayed About once a month we would have a dance in our classroom Roger was out of his element when it came to asking a girl to dance with him Once I noticed that Roger was slow dancing with Leah one of the more popular girls He had the biggest smile on his face The next day when Roger left my classroom to work with his support teacher I spoke to my class That simple act of including him in a slow dance was such a classy move At our next dance Roger asked Leah and every girl in the class to dance No one turned him down Leah taught me about the kindness of a simple act and its profound (深刻) effect
It was Serena who demonstrated (展示) bravery Serena was our play’s narrator (旁白) She was scared she would forget her lines If you do I advised pause stare at the audience and take time to remember The audience will think it’s part of the play Halfway through the opening night Serena forgot her lines She stared out at the 300 people gathered in the gym After what seemed like forever Serena remembered After the performance she burst into tears backstage (台) thinking she had let everybody down When our principal came back to congratulate our cast (全体演员) she turned to Serena and said her pause worked so well Little did she know about Serena’s little act of bravery
Teachers spend hours making lessons to teach skills and knowledge We adjust lessons keep the good and throw out the bad A good teacher listens to and learns from students and often it has nothing to do with the curriculum (课程)

I can’t remember if I was 9 or 10 years old but I do remember that it was the last day of 4H camp I was looking in the mirror and checking my face for bruises (瘀伤) The day before for some silly reason I had gotten into a fistfight with another boy It didn’t take long for the bigger boys to pull us apart and call it a draw but in truth I had lost My head was still sore from a couple of the blows the other boy had landed We hadn’t talked since the fight either but only stared coldly at each other from across the room
Still I was in a good mood this morning because I knew my Mom was bringing some of her homemade pizzas as a treat for my brother me and our friends Soon I saw her walking up the sidewalk toward the steps of our cabin (屋) She had been bringing these pizzas to us every 4H camp for years now I saw her smile as my brother and his friends all grabbed the big cut pieces She made sure though to save the last two pieces for me I thanked her with a smile and started to eat when I saw my fistfight opponent standing off to the side by himself At that moment something moved me I walked over to him and gave him one of the pieces We talked laughed and ate And for some reason unknown to me at the time the pizza tasted better than ever before
I can see now what moved my heart A little miracle (思议事) was working inside of me – moving me to forgive to give and to love And I am so happy that I followed that guidance
Scottish writer Henry Drummond wrote You will find as you look back upon your life that the moments when you have truly lived are the moments when you have done things in the spirit of love
May you really live then May you forgive give and love And may your pizza always taste delicious

What’s your favorite time of the year I like different seasons for different reasons But my favorite season is fall
Growing up I spent a lot of time with my dad and his folks on their farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina In summer I would swim in the creek (溪) chase lightning bugs (萤火虫) and go fishing with my dad In winter I’d spend hours sliding on a hill and throwing snowballs at cows and then come inside to warm my feet by the fire In spring my grandmother and I would go hunting for trees herbs (药草) and wildflowers In fall the weather was usually perfect warm enough to play in the creek by day cold enough at night to cozily curl up and listen while my grandmother or my dad told me stories
But my best fall memory begins with rain when I was 6 We drove to the farm in a light rain The next day when the clouds parted I went out to see a sight I will never forget I yelled and my grandmother came running
Look I shouted pointing at what looked to me like flames The mountains are on fire
She looked Then she laughed
That’s not fire child she said That’s just fall
I wish you could’ve seen it Those leaves left their mark on my soul Fall became my forever favorite season Not just for its colors but for other things too Books we read Talks we shared Good times we spent together We did all those things in every season But in fall the days grew shorter And longer evenings gave us more time for things that meant the most
I remember the smell of my grandmother’s stew (炖菜) cooking in a cast iron pot (铸铁锅) on her wood stove She made it with deer meat my dad had hunted It was delicious
That was long ago but I recall it clearly Some memories are gifts that stay with us forever
When seasons change they remind us that life keeps moving We recall good times gone by give thanks for the present and dare to look forward to what lies ahead
Fall will always be my favorite time of the year But the best season to celebrate life is any time any place every chance we’re given

Being a zookeeper is a dream job for me I work and live in a zoo where I can care for a variety of animals I love interacting with the lovely animals and the visitors The zoo has experienced some changes due to the pandemic but I still enjoy living and working in the zoo An exit card is a written student response to a question posed at the end of a class Students give their exit cards to the teacher before they leave the classroom and we use them as a quick check to see what they really remembered from the lesson
